I have always loved Tom Green, and I was really stoked to be able to see him when he performed stand-up at the Tempe Improv this past Friday night. I have to say, I was really impressed with his stand-up act, especially because I really didn’t expect much more than physical comedy and repeated uses of catchphrases. I really like going to shows at the Tempe Improv, since the crowds usually really get into the acts, and the venue’s nice. I’ve seen shows performed in their smaller room, the lounge, before, but this was the first time I hung out in the lounge and got a drink before the show. The space has a ton of tables, and you get your own personal cocktail waiter–no crowding around at the bar. It’s the perfect excuse to show up early and relax before the show–something I really liked.
For dinner, I ate at my favorite vegan restaurant in town, Green, which once had an “Alfredo Escudero” special (SO AWESOME). This time, I had a scrumptious vegan cupcake with vegan frosting, and it was pretty amazing that no animals were used in the creation of this wonderful dessert.
What I didn’t like was that I went there around 8:30 p.m. on a Friday night, and there was nowhere to sit in the restaurant. Service was also slow, and we finally scored a table, but had to sit with dirty dishes on it before it was bussed about 10 minutes later.
I’m really happy to see Green doing so well, but I really wish that the place was run more efficiently–maybe use a host on busy nights, add more tables outside, etc. It’s not so fun to go there and have to stand in a crowd while you’re hunting down a table. But the stress of its busy nights is not going to stop me from going there, because the food is amazing. Just a thought.
