Intimacy at Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall fits breasts perfectly

Most women think they know their bra size, but 85% of ladies are actually incorrect in how they’re supporting their goods.

Think it’s not a big deal if you’re a letter of number off? Think again. The wrong bra size can cause loss of firmness, breast strain on ligaments and sagging, not to mention discomfort. And because your pair can change from anything ranging from exercise, to weight loss and gain, to pregnancy and nursing, getting properly fitted is essential to maintaining a perky shape.

That’s why I loved a recent visit to Intimacy, an upscale lingerie, swimsuit, sports bra and sleepwear store in Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall that features tape measure-free personal consultations for all customers (make an appointment by calling or going online). The store features more than 90 bra sizes up to K, and if you’re bigger than that, you can get custom bra-wear. About half of the bra styles are convertible, and the average price of daily-wear bras falls in the $100 range, with some costing as low as $50.

I was lucky enough to visit with Susan Nethero, founder, owner and “Bra Whisperer” who is Intimacy’s chief fit strategist and a dynamo of a woman who has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show five times and countless shows around the country teaching women what to look for in bras.

Nethero was in town on a special trip last week, but everyone who works at Intimacy is an expert at getting you the right fit.

When I met with Susan, she first taught me all about what makes a great bra and why the European model of bras is far ahead of us here in the U.S. (Intimacy sells mostly European types.) She taught me 90% of bra support comes from the band, which is why it’s so important to make sure your bra band gives you proper support with levelness and tautness. Because a tape measure is a rigid construct, it’s impossible to get an accurate size solely from a tape measure reading–it’s more important to try on bras and test each style yourself.

Because women don’t want back fat, a common mistake ladies make is to get too big of a band–when really, a properly fitted bra won’t give back fat at all.  Susan also educated me about underwires–while most American brands use uncomfortable metal underwires or none at all, European makes feature plastic underwires with enough padding that will still provide lift without jabbing into your skin. European models also tend to last longer because they more carefully crafted, taking 18-22 months to make a bra there versus 6-9 months here in the U.S.

If you’re a lady, you’re likely in need of some new bras–67 percent of women wear four bras or less, but Susan said the recommended number of bras women should have in their wardrobes is five to seven. I loved the personal attention I got at Intimacy and felt confident knowing the bra I got there (thanks, Susan, for the complimentary Missoni bra/panty set) will fit and flatter my body perfectly.

It’s also common for Intimacy to do free alterations on your bra if it needs any type of tweak at all–you know that what you’re getting is the most optimized it can be for your body. Considering the risks you take without the proper fit, I think it’s well worth paying a little more than you would in a less expensive lingerie store for the best fit possible. Funky Artwear makes wearable art

I’m always on the look-out for unique fashion styles to try, so I was stoked when Scottsdale-based jeweler Funky Artwear offered me a pair of handmade earrings when I followed their Twitter account. I was excited to receive not just one, but two pairs of earrings, and they’re both super-cute!

The first pair I got was the Hand Wire Wrapped earrings, featuring large silver chunks wrapped in a blue wire with a blue stone accent. They really stand out as bold pieces and have a really unique look to them. You can purchase them here.

My bonus pair was the Dimpled Ice earrings, which I really love for their feminine and classy look. The stones were also heavy, not cheap plastic beads, and I love the length, especially for an up-do. Get them here.

Funky Artwear sells a variety of vintage jewelry, too, plus necklaces and bracelets and hand blown glass pieces. The concept of the site is wearable art, with detailed thought in each design that makes the pieces super-interesting to look at. I’ve received lots of compliments on my earrings, and I like all the brightly colored, affordable pieces featured on the site (they’re all less than $70 for jewelry sets).

20 Lounge offers luxe, relaxing, pampering environment

You’ve got to love a beauty salon that serves you wine while you’re getting yourself did up. That’s why I definitely appreciate 20 Lounge in the Scottsdale Seville plaza, since they recognize how a libation can make the salon experience that much more relaxing. There are many other neat touches to the salon experience here, as well.

I love the flat screen televisions displaying pop music hits. I never get to watch MTV in the early mornings when the channel plays music videos, so it’s nice to be able to catch up on the music world while you’re getting your nails done. And unlike some salons that show television programs or movies, 20 Lounge’s choice to display music videos means more people will be happy with what they’re looking at.

I was really impressed by the friendliness of the staff both times I’ve been. They are so accommodating, and my nail technician was a great conversationalist. She also expressed a genuine interest in the health of my nails, which I really appreciated.

I got a manicure and pedicure (manicures start at $20, pedicures at $30) at 20 Lounge (they also offer facials and waxing), and I absolutely loved the warm towel on my neck as I was getting my manicure–ultra-soothing! I thought the atmosphere, with a white and light teal color scheme, was really pretty, and the whole experience felt luxe and classy.

20 Lounge has a really cool membership program that gives members service discounts and retail perks for $30 a month. For more info on the salon, go to www.20lounge.com.

Maria Vassett Photography creates a memorable experience

A couple weeks ago, I did something really out-of-the-ordinary by getting boudoir shots taken by my friend Maria Vassett at Epiphany! Studios. I’ve always sort of wanted to play model for a night, and I figured I should get them done now to remember this time in my life (plus, I had something to celebrate and was giving a present to myself.) It was a great experience, and I’m so happy with how the photos turned out, I wanted to recommend Maria if you or a lady in your life is considering getting them done.

Our session was about 2 hours long, and I had four outfit changes and several scene set-ups. The studio was pretty big, with a cool graffiti-covered bathroom, a pretty dressing room, a couch and a ton of floor space.  I was really nervous stripping down to my skivvies for some of the shots, but Maria made me feel so comfortable because she is so encouraging, professional and kind. She gave me a ton of direction, and there were a ton of distinct looks to choose from.

I got a great selection of black-and-white and color photos, and they make a great gift for someone special in your life or just for yourself! Check out some of my SFW shots here, and log on to www.epiphanyphotostudios.com for more details.

Park Avenue Blow Dry and Beauty Bar a fun, relaxing salon experience

I’ve been a very lucky lady the past few weeks, experiencing lots of prettifying places in the Valley.

Last week, I went to the new Park Avenue Blow Dry and Beauty Bar in Arcadia, right next to Arcadia Tavern. The inside is gorgeous and girly, with a pretty pink and orange color scheme and dainty furniture that looks like it belongs in a dollhouse.

Like Drybar, Park Avenue offers blow-outs for $35, but it also features make-up applications, spray tans and mini-facials for the same price.

My stylist was Miss Lauren Duet (request her if you go!), and she did a fabulous job. She got my hair perfect—I opted for a little bit of bounce with soft waves—and the make-up was amazing. I don’t know how she did it so well, but I couldn’t help but feel pretty after leaving (and that’s hard to get me to do!)

The atmosphere was very relaxed and peaceful, and you get water to sip on while you’re getting your treatment. I also liked the Pandora radio station that was playing, a mix of indie rock, and everyone I interacted with there was super-friendly.

It’s only been open for a month, so now’s your chance to be one of the first Park Avenue customers. They also offer bundles of packages, which saves you lots of money, so be sure to ask about those. For more info, log on to www.parkavenueblowdry.com.

Drybar at Scottsdale Quarter makes you feel fabulous

There are way too many great things I could say about Drybar at the Scottsdale Quarter.

The newly opened salon is a breath of fresh air that will make you feel like a princess (or prince, since guys are, of course, welcome, too.) The salon specializes in blowouts–that’s simply it. For $35, get one of five different styles, from the stick-straight Manhattan to the volume-heavy Southern Comfort. The cutest little look-book “menu” give you a great idea of each style, and they’re all freaking cute. I got the Cosmopolitan, with loose curls, while my pal Molly opted for the Straight Up, which had a little bit of bounce.

The atmosphere we got our hair done in was so precious. The salon features a bright yellow color scheme with accents of black and white, and all the stylists’ wardrobes fit right in. There were also pictures of pretty iconic ladies on the walls and lots of mirrors to check out your style in. It’s sort of difficult not to smile in a place that looks like sunshine, and Drybar certainly does.

First, we had our hair shampooed and conditioned. For an extra $10, you can add on a 10-minute head massage (called a Floater), which I highly recommend because it’s so worth the splurge.

Then, we picked out our styles and received complimentary drinks–there is champagne, white wine and more. The salon also features an a la carte menu of snacks, plus an array of magazines to read, so there is really nothing else you need.

I also loved the pop music that played–walking into a salon playing Lady Gaga was wonderful. The stylists were amazing and really kind, and Drybar also offers killer membership deals with no strings attached that just save you a lot of money. Ask about them. I can’t wait to go back…let me know if you need a buddy to go with you!

Hand and Stone Massage offers up smoking Valley massage deals

Getting massages is one of my all-time favorite things to do. It’s the ultimate relaxation experience and something I view almost as vital for the health benefits rather than a silly luxury–for me, it’s essential to get a great massage at least once a month so that my body feels more relaxed.

couples room

That’s why I’m stoked about the freaking smoking membership deal Hand and Stone Massage offers–an hour-long massage for less than $50 a month, with a myriad of discounts in addition to that. I can’t think of anywhere else you could find such a great deal by such professional massage therapists, and there are five locations in the Valley.

Hand and Stone Scottsdale

In addition to massage, Hand and Stone also offers facials and waxing, as well as aromatherapy. I’ve had both Swedish and hot stone massages there, and I’ve never left unsatisfied. (Request a massage from Jennifer Lykken if you go to the north Scottsdale location–she’s amazing!)

For those who have never received a hot stone massage, it’s a very interesting experience. The therapist rolls the hot stones around on your back, and the massage is just as much about feeling the warming sensations as it is the neat differences in pressure.

I wouldn’t choose it over a regular Swedish massage, though. With the hot stones, the therapist is constantly moving back and forth from the client’s table to the spot where the stones are, so you don’t experience as much constant touch as you do with the Swedish. And, for me, feeling someone’s hands is just as good, if not better than, having stones rolled on me. That said, I think the hot stone massage is worth trying at least once because it may become your new favorite kind.

First-time massages at Hand and Stone are extremely inexpensive, at only $39.95  for your first hour-long regular massage or $59.95 for the first hot stone massage. For more info, log on to www.handandstone.com.

Salon3121 in Phoenix offers friendly, relaxing treatments

I’ve been more budget-conscious than ever before lately, but thankfully there are cool deals websites such as Groupon and LivingSocial that send out awesome coupons for really neat places in the Valley. The Phoenix New Times and its sister publications recently launched a similar service, called Voice Deal of the Day, and last week I checked out Salon3121 in Phoenix for the first time because of the awesome $30 manicure/pedicure deal my friend and I got through the Voice Deal of the Day.

DSCN2673

The full-service salon offers everything from nails and hair to waxing and massage. Owner Michelle Davis will talk your ear off about anything, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

The Rock Star pedicure treatment we got was so cool, and it was my first time ever getting my nails done like that. Instead of a polish that’s painted on, a thick, glitter-filled gel is applied to the nails. Then, your feet are placed under bright lights that quick-dry the polish. It lasts at least 2 weeks but can stay on for much longer–and the drying process is so fast!

I also loved the classic manicure I got. We had our hands soak and get nice and soft before the polish was applied, a nice spa touch in addition to the awesome leg rubs with the pedicures. I would definitely recommend Salon3121 to anyone looking for excellent service and friendly technicians. For more info, check out www.salon3121.com.
